Grassroots Retreat News & Updates

The 2005 Grassroots Retreat was an educational experience for all involved. The retreat was held at Penn Center, St. Helena Island just across the bridge from Beaufort, South Carolina. The conference center is composed of four restored facilities and a waterfront retreat house. The center is used for many cultural events, as the Gullah Festival, weddings, writing groups, meetings and receptions.

The shady two lane highway that winds from Beaufort to Saint Helena, with its dark oaks that loom overhead and the Spanish moss curtains fringing the marshland views—is only a hint of the barrier island’s profound natural beauty and charm. This was the landscape of the SC Association of CDC’s 2005 Grassroots Retreat, and it was imbued with a history as deep and dynamic as the tidewater creeks that braid Saint Helena with their indigo, saltwater sheen.
