US Congress 2006 Budget Update
May 11th, 2005
The U.S. Congress is almost done working out the 2006 Budget. The newest version clearly shows who will get federal money and who will be left with slim pickins. Environmental programs will be cut the most, and some development projects will also be reduced. For example, money to heat the homes of low-income families and for anti-drug programs in schools will be greatly decreased. But, this budget has some big wins for the development sector! Congress did not agree with President Bush’s attempt to squish 18 economic and community development programs, now housed in the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), into 1 program at the Department of Commerce. That plan was one of Bush’s highest profile cuts, and anti-poverty groups nationwide were up in arms over it. Congress’ response to that outcry is a BIG WIN FOR SOUTH CAROLINA CDCs and all agencies involved in community development work.
