Letter to the Editor: A Response to President Bush’s 2006 Budget

The further we push forward, the further we are pulled back

It is ironic that President Bush would release the most austere budget of his administration during February, Black History Month. This is a time of year when we as a nation stop to take stock in how well we have progressed in providing opportunities to those who have been disenfranchised in our history a nation. This is a time when we measure the progress of a people (African Americans) who were stolen from their homeland, endured legalized slavery, oppression, humiliation, degradation, segregation, and finally emancipation after 400 years. But Black History Month not only causes a nation to pause and look at the status of oppressed African Americans, but also of Native Americans, Hispanic Americans and even poor rural White Americans, who have not yet experienced full economic equality.
